Relative Energy Deficiency in Sport (RED-S)

RED-S stands for Relative Energy Deficiency in Sport. Similar to the Female Athlete Triad, low energy availability is at the foundation of RED-S and can include menstrual irregularity and impaired bone health. RED-S also examines impacts on physiological function, psychological health, and athletic performance (Mountjoy, et al). RED-S can have numerous impacts on performance like increased injury risk, impaired judgment, and depression as shown in the graphic. As we know, low energy, menstrual dysfunction, and impaired bone health make up the triad but there are a variety of other health consequences of RED-S.
